Frozen Meat

Wholesale frozen meat, by the carton or pallet

In short

Wholesale frozen meat is beef, lamb, pork, poultry or seafood frozen at the processor and traded in cartons and pallets, usually for manufacturing, foodservice or forward stock. Frozen product gives buyers a longer storage window and more flexibility on timing than chilled, but it needs freezer capacity, a frozen cold chain and careful thawing. On Protein Link, every listing states its storage state, so frozen stock can be compared directly across species and suppliers.

Why businesses buy frozen

  • Longer storage life, so buyers can hold stock for planned production or busy periods.
  • More flexibility on delivery timing than short-shelf-life chilled product.
  • Access to excess or seasonal stock that suppliers freeze to hold its value.
  • Consistent supply for manufacturing programs that run on frozen trim and portions.

How frozen meat is produced and packed

Most frozen wholesale meat is packed into cartons and then blast frozen or plate frozen at the processing plant, so it freezes quickly and evenly. Portions and small pieces may be individually quick frozen (IQF). Bulk trim and block product are frozen in the carton.

Cartons are stacked onto pallets for storage and freight. The pallet configuration, carton weight and stacking pattern all affect how much fits in a freight space; see cartons, pallets and freight spaces.

Frozen meat across species

  • Beef: manufacturing trim by chemical lean, forequarter and hindquarter primals.
  • Lamb: shoulders, flaps, legs and trim for foodservice and manufacturing.
  • Pork: bellies, legs and trim, often for smallgoods.
  • Chicken and poultry: IQF portions, bulk fillets and MDM.
  • Seafood: IQF prawns, block frozen fish and portions.

Shelf life and date marking

Freezing slows deterioration but does not stop quality loss. Ask for the packing or production date as well as any best-before date, and decide how much remaining shelf life you need on arrival. Older frozen stock can still be safe and suitable for some uses, such as manufacturing, while not being right for others.

Avoid refreezing product that has thawed: it affects quality and can create food safety risks.

Cold storage and thawing

Before buying at pallet scale, confirm you have the freezer space to receive the order. Frozen food should be received frozen and kept frozen until it is used. Thaw under refrigeration rather than at room temperature, and plan thawing time into production schedules; a carton of block-frozen meat takes much longer to thaw than IQF portions.

For how chilled and frozen compare, see chilled versus frozen wholesale meat.

What to specify when buying frozen meat

  • Product, cut and specification, as you would for chilled.
  • Freezing method: IQF, blast frozen in carton, or block frozen.
  • Packing date and remaining shelf life on arrival.
  • Net weight per carton, and whether it is net of any glaze.
  • Carton count per pallet, and pallet type.
  • Your receiving freezer capacity and delivery window.

How frozen stock trades on Protein Link

Frozen and chilled freight are coordinated according to the listing’s storage state, and availability for your lane is confirmed during onboarding. Suppliers with surplus frozen stock can read selling excess stock.

  • Verified suppliers publish structured listings: product, specification, storage state, pack format, available volume and one buyer price per kilogram, ex GST.
  • Supplier base pricing is never shown to buyers. Buyers only see the platform price.
  • Approved buyers submit an order request against a listing, and the supplier accepts it.
  • Freight is quoted for that shipment and confirmed before the buyer pays.
  • Payment runs through the platform, processed by Stripe.
  • Buyer and supplier identities stay protected until the order reaches fulfilment.

Frequently asked questions

Is frozen meat lower quality than chilled?

Not necessarily. Meat frozen quickly at the processor and kept frozen can perform very well, especially in manufacturing and slow cooking. Quality depends on the starting product, the freezing method and how long and how well it has been stored.

How long does frozen meat last?

It varies by product, packaging and storage conditions. Check the packing date and any best-before date on the listing, and choose the remaining shelf life you need for your use.

Can I mix species in one frozen order?

Each order request is placed against a single listing from a single supplier. You can place several orders, and freight is quoted for each shipment.

What happens if frozen product arrives thawed?

Check deliveries on arrival and report a problem through the order straight away. Reporting records the issue against the order and is reviewed by the team.
